Your Makeup Bag is Putting You at Risk

Did you know the number one cause of eye infection is lurking in your purse? That’s right, your makeup bag is teeming with all kinds of germs and bacteria that can cause serious damage including allergic reactions, skin irritation, eye infection--even staph infection. Every day our skin sheds tens of thousands of dead cells. Pollution, the elements and free radicals combined with layers of makeup, natural oils and bacteria living on our skin and in our brows and lashes create the perfect environment for bacteria to grow.

We got down and dirty with the major culprits behind bacterial growth and found three easy ways to fight germs and harmful bacteria. You might be surprised how small, daily actions can go a long way in helping to prevent eye infection.

The (Icky) Truth About Your Makeup Bag

Let’s be honest, ladies--when was the last time you cleaned, let alone organized your makeup and makeup bag? The reality is that many of us juggle full schedules. Deadlines at work, a long commute, parenting, a side hustle. There’s a seemingly endless list of things to do, meetings to attend, schedules to coordinate and more. Which leaves us with very limited time to regularly clean our cosmetics, especially during moments when we need to grab, go and get on with our day.

But if you stop and ask any makeup artist, regular sanitation is so important when it comes to preventing eye infection, skin irritation and bacterial growth. Most professional makeup artists use disposable applicators as much as possible, and sanitize their brushes, compacts and eyeshadows after each client use. That’s for good reason. According to experts, as soon as your makeup brush (and especially your mascara wand) touches your skin, brows or lashes, it’s contaminated. Believe it or not, your eyebrows and eyelashes harbor invisible bacteria, which is why you should never share mascara--or any other eye brushes for that matter.

Beauty gurus and even medical experts agree that sharing cosmetics is one of the easiest ways to develop an eye infection or worse. Which is actually no problem--more makeup for me, amiright? Mascara really is the worst culprit, easily breeding bacteria that causes eye infection including conjunctivitis (also known as pinkeye) or worse.

Three Easy Ways to Help Prevent Eye Infection

Makeup products typically have a shelf life of anywhere between three months to two years depending on the product. Imagine how much bacteria builds up over time not only on the outside of the container, but on the inside as well. Makeup brushes also harbor bacteria that can cause eye infection and often breakouts when not regularly cleaned.

Tip #1--Wash & Dry

One way to reduce the spread of germs and bacterial growth in your cosmetics and brushes is to prioritize a clean beauty routine. It’s simple according to our friends at Glamour. Washing and drying your hands might seem obvious, but it’s especially important before you dip your fingers into a jar of moisturizer or apply liquid foundation using your fingertips. Use disposable makeup wipes or a clean white washcloth to remove makeup, and make sure to change out your face towel every two to four days.

Tip #2--Scrub & Spritz

Another way to help prevent eye infection is to regularly clean your brushes and makeup sponges. Most brushes only need to be cleaned three to four times a month, but some women take it one step further and simply rinse their foundation brushes as a part of their daily beauty routine. The easiest way to eliminate germs and harmful bacteria from your brushes is to wash brushes using warm water and a gentle shampoo, then lay flat to dry. If you’re in a rush, simply spritz your brushes with 91% isopropyl alcohol between one to two times a week to sanitize. You can do the same with compacts and eyeshadows.

Tip #3--Grab & Go

We’ve saved the best tip for last. It’s also the easiest way to ward off bacteria and help reduce the risk of eye infection. Simply put: get rid of your greasy, sticky, bacteria infested makeup bag. By design, most makeup bags aren’t very easy to clean. And how often do you actually toss yours in the wash.. Never? We thought so.

Why organizing your cosmetics can lead to LESS stress

We live in a time where one in five Americans report feeling extremely stressed. Naturally, the process to coping with stress is not an easy road. Stress can leave us feeling frustrated, disorganized and overall discouraged.  On top of it all, we must look professional at work and dedicate a good portion of our morning to a cosmetic routine. But what if you just don’t have the time?

Researchers say that over the course of the day, disorganization can cause a natural decline in our cortisol.  As a result, this can take a toll on your mood, sleep, health, and more. Our goal as healthy individuals should be to reduce this risk of stress so that we can continuously work towards improving our physical and mental health.

From first hand experience, it is anything but stress-free when digging through a large cosmetic bag looking for a specific item. We rush to get ready in our cars, which in turn make us more stressed when stepping into our busy work environment. Even in our own space at home, there is a tedious and frustrating routine in which we have to scramble around our drawers, blindly attempting to locate our cosmetic products. For those who like to bring their makeup on the go, this can be even more stressful. Which products should you bring and how do you keep them all visible in one place? The black hole we call our makeup bag is surely, not the answer.

"The black hole we call our makeup bag is surely, not the answer."

The obvious way to avoid such a stressful situation is to remain organized – but that is what is referred to as easier said than done. Poke A Dot turns that said into done for you.  Eliminating the initial mess clears out necessary space in your mind for a more relaxed attitude. Your brain is constantly scanning the environment around you, making it even more difficult to focus on the little things.  The comfort of knowing where your stuff is, and exactly how to reach it, can make all the difference in your mood. In fact, without even knowing it, stress alone makes the process of getting ready twice as long because your brain isn’t fully allowing you to rationalize your own thoughts. Thus, we find ourselves spending minutes/hours just trying to de-clutter our thoughts before we even take proper action.

Just like a beautifully crafted to-do list, organizing your cosmetics is an effective, stress-relieving way to see and visualize all that you have to take on. There is too much in this life we have no control over, let this be something you DO have control over. And most importantly –spend more time on what’s important to YOU!
